Ian Lowrey
United Hockey Club and we would like to nominate Ian Lowrey for Life Membership of Hockey ACT.
In a sport that relies heavily on volunteers, Ian over an extended period of time has made significant contributions to Hockey in the ACT and we as a club would like these to be honoured and recognised by being awarded Life Membership status of Hockey ACT.
Most significant of a long list of roles Ian has taken up over the past 30 years is that of his role on the Senior Competitions Committee from the last 1990s to 2010. Holding various positions over his tenure including Secretary he was most notable in his role during this time in designing and building the competition draw and fixturing.
A role that today takes paid staff considerable time, angst and heartache, Ian would always fulfil his roles in a voluntary capacity, committing 20-30 hours a week prior to the season commencing to establish the draws, training schedule, incorporating team days, special requests and ensuring gradings were accurate.
Throughout the season his role would continue to ensure the match cards were reviewed and entered, ladders and finals programmes were accurate, including the establishing of an automated system to assist with the administrative process and ensure a platform was created to move forward with.
Ian would also through the Committee be involved in re-drafting he Competition Committee by-laws
Over the years Ian has also fulfilled numerous other roles for Hockey ACT and his club, United Hockey Club including
- Technical bench officer at various levels including International Fixtures, AHL and Under Age National Championships.
- Technical Bench Support team at the 2005 Champions Trophy
- United Hockey Club Committee, late 1990s to 2008. Fulfilling roles of Men’s Coordinator, Men’s Selection Committee and Umpiring Coordinator.
- Playing member since starting in Minkey as a boy in the early 80s to today, still playing an important role as a leader and mentor to our juniors in 4th Grade Men’s.
Although Ian’s contribution have been highlighted throughout the years including being recognised as the HACT Volunteer of the Year “Bill Weidner Trophy” in 2006 and the ACT Volunteering Award in 2002, we now feel that Ian’s contributions to Hockey ACT and the broader Hockey Community need to be recognised at a higher level.
