2019 Brophy McKay Presentation Night Winners

On September 18, Hockey ACT hosted its annual awards evening, Brophy McKay night at the Canberra Labor Club in Belconnen. The evening celebrated the 2019 hockey season, whilst also acknowledging and recognising the outstanding achievements of our players, umpires, and volunteers.

The major award winners for the evening were Tina Taseska from Central and Ben Staines from Goulburn who took out the Mckay and Brophy medals respectively.

The Brophy Medal was a tightly contested race in the Mens Duncan’s Plumbing Capital 1 competition, with only three points separating the top three place getters. Heading into the final round the winner was still undetermined.

Brophy Medal winner Ben Staines secured a single point in the final round of voting to secure the win with a final total of 34. Despite not playing four rounds due to injury Ben was a consistent performer throughout the 2019 season.

First runner up Lewis Shepherd, from Old Canberrans, finished the competition on 33 points, just one point behind Staines. Shepherd and Staines were also joint winners of the Deanne McLennan Trophy, for the highest goal scorers in the competition.

Finishing in third place was Canberra Chill co-captain Daniel Conroy from Old Canberrans on 32 points.

Similar to the Brophy Medal, the McKay medal went down to the last round of regular play with two women still in the running after round 20.

McKay Medal winner Tina Taseska was the stand out player for Central, in the Womens Canberra Labor Club Capital League One Competition. The three-time winner is currently in New Zealand playing in the NHL before returning to Australia to play for the Canberra Chill in the inaugural Hockey One season.

First runner up went to Kate Gilmore from Old Canberrans on 51 points. Kate was also named in the team of the year. Third place went to 2018 winner Catriona Bailey-Price on 46 points.

The Brophy McKay Medals are awarded to the league’s best and fairest. At the end of each round officials vote on players using a 5-3-1 system.
