2020 CEO Wrap Up

Published Thu 17 Dec 2020

Dear Members,

On behalf of the Board and staff of Hockey ACT, I would like to thank you for your considerable efforts throughout the year to ensure that we were able to conduct the 2020 season.

2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for all of the ACT and Hockey ACT is no different. In March this year the organisation faced a battle for survival when the 2020 season had to be postponed. Hockey ACT has faced many challenges this year and I would like to thank all of our members for staying resolute in ensuring the future survival of the organisation and Hockey in the ACT.

Despite all of the challenges that Hockey ACT has faced in 2020 we have so much to be thankful for. Hockey was the first community sport in the ACT to recommence following the Covid shutdown. Hockey have been able to offer an 18 round outdoor season and a full indoor season despite the challenges we faced. We have been able to upgrade the lights on the Watt Field, deliver new scoreboards for the Watt, Powell and Kjar Fields and with thanks to the ACT Government will soon be able to resurface the area between the Powell and Watt Fields to improve accessibility for all users of the Lyneham facility.

Our community continued to support its fellow members through the Hockey ACT Fair Go Sport! Pride Round supporting members of the LGBTQI+ community and enforcing our commitment as a hockey community to continue to strive to achieve a truly welcoming, safe and inclusive community for all people.

Most of all, we are thankful for the Hockey ACT Community. Despite challenges our membership in 2020 has reached 3100, 94% of our 2019 membership which is a remarkable achievement. Add to that the 301 players who participated in the Hookin2Hockey and it is a terrific outcome for the sport this season.

To the 3400 individuals who had the courage to commit to playing hockey in 2020, thank you, thank you, thank you! HACT could offer all of the competitions in the world but without you and your dedication nothing would have been possible. This season we have run competitions in every grade that was offered despite all of the road blocks that were put in place.

In the toughest of years it has been the contribution of our members that has shone so bright. Thank you for making Hockey your sport of choice in 2020, and we look forward to welcoming you back whether it be in social, indoor or for the next winter season.

I wish you all the most joyous festive seasons and the happiest of new year’s. We have most certainly earned it!

Kind Regards,

Rob Sheekey
