2024 CL1 Womens Preview

Published Thu 04 Apr 2024

Women:

The Canberra Labor Club Capital League One Women’s Competition will be a tightly contested competition, with so much movement in the off-season there is likely to be some changes in the top four come September. Following their first women’s premiership Goulburn District Hockey Association have lost a lot of players and will be in a re-building phase, although you can never underestimate them, especially at home.

Predicted top 4:

Tuggeranong Vikings have recruited well in the off season with Canberra with Canberra Chill star and former Hockeyroos Kalindi Commerford returning to the team in addition to the 2023 CL1’s highest goal scorer Laura Reid. Adding players of that calibre to a team filled with Canberra Chill and ACT U21 players should see TVHC pushing to finish one higher than their runners up medals in 2023.

North Canberra Eagles were disappointed with their 5th place finish in 2023 and will have a point to prove in 2024. They have recruited well with Chill stars Lauren Yee and Taylor Thomson and Brisbane Blaze player Georgina West. Look to NCE to make the top 4 in 2024 and be playing hockey deep into September.

St Pats are difficult to write off, with seasoned Chill stars Naomi and Mikayla Evans, Zanthe Sheargold, Ash Seivers and Emma Taylor they can’t be underestimated. Watch for them come the pointy end of the season, they may just be the dark horse of the 2024 season.

They may have a new name, but the UC Stars have a somewhat similar playing group who are looking to build on their successful fourth position in 2024. They have added some young Central West players to their mix who will look to add some additional fire power to the team. With the whisper of a strong recruit returning to the club mid-season, they will push the other teams all the way to September.

Tuggeranong Vikings will be looking to continue their successful 2023 season in 2024, which saw them runners up to Goulburn in the season decider.

This year sees a great balance of proven experience and talented up and coming athletes. Dual McKay medalist Sophie Gaughan leads the team and reigning, and dual McKay medalist Mikki Patterson is joined once again by fellow Chill players Sarah White and Sassie Economos. Kalindi Commerford, Chill Captain, makes a long awaited and welcomed return to Vikings as does last year’s highest scorer in the Canberra competition and Hockey 1, Laura Reid.

Combined with an exciting and talented ‘up and coming’ group including Imogen Dorsett, Australian Futures Squad, Pip Lendrum, Ellen Vahey and Jess Speechley all off the back of a successful Under 21s Nationals, Vikings are looking forward to some great hockey this season.

Olivia Martin/Emma De Kiefte/Meredith Bone

Key Ins

Gabby Millan - GK (Moved from ANU), Jess Healey - GK (NSW U21s GK), Addi Chapman - Orange

Outs for 2024

Lauren Yee

Rising Star

Lizzy Salter - second season with UC, played in the U21s group in 2024. She is an understated player who can hold her own and is a solid carrier of the ball. She stands out in the midfield and will be one to watch this season.

Team says

With the playing group remaining somewhat similar, we are looking to build on the success we have had in the last couple of years. We are aiming at finishing in the top 4 and making a run at finals time. We are excited for the new additions to the group who are already standing out not only in our club practices, but also making waves in state programs (Jess - NSW U21s GK, Addi - NSW AAP Squad). The group is closer than ever and have welcomed the new recruits into the squad seamlessly. We are looking forward to a positive season where we can grow as a group and get some good outcomes.

United

Coach

Cameron Smith

Captains

Sophie Backhus & Alyssa Smith

Key Ins

Lucy Neely - Coming off the back of a strong U21s Tournament Lucy will provide an attacking option from the outside half

Georgia Staines - making the move from Goulburn and adding strength to United's defence

Jess Cox - Brings a wealth of experience and returns to United. Coxy will add to the strong culture and work well with the younger players

Outs for 2024

Emily Robson - A massive out as she was probably the #1 defender in Canberra. She will return following her rehad for her ACL injury suffered in the HockeyOne season.

We have also lost a few other young players due to moving for uni or concentrating on completing year 12. Eliza Kemp, Chloe Kemp and Annie Knight

Rising Star

We have three players who we hope to see stamp their foot on the competition this year.

Lucy Neely - had a strong U21s, playing as a back 4 defender and showing that she can have a strong impact as an overlapping half. Her Corner running will add strength to United's penalty corner defence.

Alyssa Smith - while she is in her 6th year in CL1 at 18 years old, she has also come off a strong U21s Tournament hoping to push a case for Jillaroos selection.

Mackenzie Hughes - In her second year with the club, Macka comes off the U21s tournament in goal scoring form, scoring 3 goals and equal top goal scorer for ACT.

Team says

United is still in a developing stage and will look to continue to build connections across the field. While developing we have expectations to be able to challenge a number of teams this year, while being a young team we are full of junior and senior representative players. This includes players that have been part of the Chill squad, hold ACTAS scholarships, as well as U21, U18 and U16 ACT teams. We can't forget about one of our favourites Sally Pratley who will also be going to a masters World Cup this year.

The team is excited about the season ahead. With a strengthened defence, including additions of Georgia Staines, Lucy Neely and Jess Cox playing in front of Alyssa in the goals we hope to keep the goals against to a minimum. If we can bag some early wins through our key strikers including Macka Hughes, this will set up our season allowing us to grow in confidence and eyeing off September (Finals) hockey, which would be a great reward.
