ACT OPEN WOMEN MAKE HISTORY AT THE NATIONAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The ACT Opens indoor representative teams have cleaned up at the 2024 National Indoor Championships, hosted on home soil.

 

In a history – making match, the ACT Open Women took home their first ever gold at the National Indoor Championships. The thrilling Grand Final match saw the side secure a two-goal lead over rivals, NSW – State (3-1).

With 11 goals against her name, Taylor Thomson was awarded top goal scorer of the competition.

The side put on an outstanding performance throughout the week, finishing second on the ladder. Their defence was near impenetrable, with the lowest number of goals scored against the team over the round matches.  

 

The 2024 Indoor Championships will be one to remember, meaning a great deal for all involved the women’s side.

 

That’s not all for the ACT! The Open Men also had an impressive performance, snagging the bronze medal at home.

In the fourth quarter, the Men’s side came fighting back from a two-goal deficit to finish the match at 5-2 against Victoria.

The Open Men were the pick of the bunch during the round matches, sitting at the top of the ladder ahead of finals. The side boasted a strong line up, with current Canberra Chill stars Jake Staines, Connor Tuddenham, Brendan Hill, Jaume Torras, Garry Backhus, and Aiden Dooley. The side also featured former Australian Indoor representatives Glenn Turner and Matthew Hotchkis, with the addition of the current South African captain Jethro Eustice.

 

The gold medal follows the Canberra Chill women’s silver medal in the 2023 JDH Hockey One League, proving that the ACT is making strides in women’s hockey.
