Hockey ACT Remembers Ray Brown Ahead Of Round 1 Fixture

HOCKEY ACT REMEMBERS RAY BROWN AHEAD OF ROUND 1 FIXTURE
Saturday the 25th of March marks the first weekend of Capital League One senior competitions for season 2023, a day of which will also be shared to remember the life of Ray Brown OAM and his significance to the sport of hockey in the Australian Capital Territory.
Ray was a Life Member of the association, having received the recognition in 1973 for his services to Hockey ACT. He was also granted a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008 for his commitment to the administration of hockey in the region.
Ray Brown made an extraordinary contribution to hockey over a period of more than 50 years, fulfilling many roles and responsibilities including financial management, and leadership and committee positions. Working as the Foundation Treasurer to the Hockey Centre for 26 years, his skills and knowledge were crucial in the development of the Hockey ACT association throughout the 1980s-2010s, and re-development of the National Hockey Centre in 2016. Ray also played a pivotal role in the development and introduction of Minkey Hockey (now Hookin2Hockey) into the junior competition.
In 2016, Ray received a CBR Sport award in recognition for his services to hockey in the capital region.
On Saturday, CL fixtures between Brown’s beloved Central Hockey Club and United Hockey Club at the Lyneham Hockey. The games will take place surrounding the Ray Brown Memorial where friends and family will be in attendance, as well life members of Hockey ACT and Central Hockey Club. As a way to pay recognition to commitments Ray Brown made to the sport in our state, Hockey ACT will unveil painted seats in the grandstand where Ray regularly sat to watch game.
“It is a tremendous honour be able to extend the legacy of Ray, we hope that this gesture encapsulates how grateful we are to have had his influence, passion and generosity toward hockey in the ACT,” says Hockey ACT CEO, Rob Sheekey.
The Ray Brown Memorial will lead into the Men’s first round match between Central and United, a rematch of last season’s Grand Final where Ray’s club became the current holders of the Hill Trophy.
