Hookin2Hockey Coordinators of the Year!

Published Fri 08 Nov 2024

Congratulations to Cindy Woods, Megan Spurrell and April Bruce from Monaro Hockey Club for winning the Hookin2Hockey Coordinator of the Year award!

Cindy, Megan and April have put in alot of time and effort and have achieved fantastic results - read more about their nomination below.

The team of Cindy, Megan and April have overseen the Hookin2Hockey program for the Monaro Hockey Club, a recently rebranded an emerging club in the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area. They are a combination of parents and volunteers who are driven by and passionate about bringing the experience of hockey to the local community through outreach gala days, school holiday programs and memorable events such as walking out with the Canberra Chill for home Hockey One League games. Their work has led to growth in all aspects of the hockey club, none of which would be possible without their diligent work ethic, creativity, and willingness to go above and beyond for the program and its participants.

The team have worked tirelessly, selflessly, and skillfully to implement the Hookin2Hockey program over the past three seasons. This is evident in the growth of the program; since 2022, the number of participants has over doubled every year since they have taken over starting at six in 2022 and currently at 32 in 2024. In addition, this growth has had a ripple effect throughout the entire Monaro Hockey Club. For the first time in about 10 years, the club has a standalone under 10s team and many of the parents of the Hookin2Hockey participants have joined the club in various volunteer, administrative and playing roles. This growth has been achieved through the dedication of the team, running two sessions per week for the participants so that they can grow as players and enjoy all the fun that comes with playing hockey with friends.

The sessions that are organised and run by the team not only incorporate the skills that the participants learn but are delivered in a fun and engaging way. A recent example was an Olympic-themed day where the participants put together all the skills they had learned so far in the season in creative and inclusive ways. Examples include a shot put style event that used scooping skills, a long jump event using hockey sticks on the ground, and many more The first-hand feedback gathered from club executives at such events has been overwhelmingly positive with a sense of gratitude and community being felt whenever there is a Hookin2Hockey event in the club.

Congratulations again Cindy, Megan and April!
