PATTERSON & CRAIG SECURE McKAY & BROPHY MEDALS
Published Wed 28 Sep 2022
For the first time since 2019 the Hockey ACT Community have been able to come together in one location to celebrate their annual Brophy McKay Medal evening. The night celebrates the accomplishments across administration, umpiring and high performance with the two major awards being the McKay Medal to the Canberra Labor Club Women’s Capital League One player of the year and the Brophy Medal to the Duncans Plumbing Men’s Capital League One player of the year.
Hockey ACT were pleased to welcome Heather McKay to present the McKay Medal to Old Canberran’s star Mikaela Patterson. Patterson who has represented the Hockeyroos has relocated to Canberra and dominated this year’s vote securing the medal with two rounds of voting still to be counted. Patterson’s outstanding form is a great sign heading into her first season with the Canberra Chill in a fortnights time.
Goulburn striker Laura Reid finished second despite missing significant playing time with injury which shows the former National Development Squad member is in good form ahead of a Canberra Chill season where she will play a vital role with the team. North Canberra Eagles defender Rebecca Lee finished third.
The Brophy Medal was an incredibly close vote that went down to the final round with Central Hockey Club’s Ben Craig taking home the Medal. It caps an incredible week for Ben Craig after guiding Central to victory in last Saturday’s Grand Final and winning the Gordan Pike Trophy for player of the Grand Final. Similar to Patterson, Craig has also relocated to Canberra following his time with the Kookaburras and is looking forward to making his debut with the Canberra Chill in this year’s Sultana Bran Hockey One League.
St. Patrick’s defender Josh Chivers finished second with Old Canberrans veteran Tristan Kearns capping off the best season of his career finishing third on the count.
Goulburn Women’s Coaches Naomi Jones and Steve Freebody were awarded with the Errol Bill Trophy for Women’s Coach of the year for guiding their young side into the grand final. Central Men’s Coaches Andrew Brick and Matthew Hotchkis took home the JES MacKinnon Trophy for the Men’s Coach of the Year following their Grand Final success this season.
Experienced umpire Kristy Robertson was awarded female umpire of the year with Stirling Sharpe taking home the Jim Gallagher Trophy for the Men’s Umpire of the Year for the second year running. Both umpires have been rewarded for their performance and will umpire in the Hockey One League this season. Sharpe recently umpired an international series between Australia A and Japan and Robertson will head to Spain in December to umpire the FIH Women’s Nation Cup.
Hockey ACT also presented Life Membership of the association to Andrew Sutton for his incredible service to junior participation and umpiring over the past 40 years.
“It is so exciting to welcome everyone back into one location after conducting the last two awards online due to covid” Hockey ACT CEO, Rob Sheekey advised, “The Brophy McKay awards are a pinnacle event on our social calendar, and always a welcome way to celebrate the end-of-season. It continues to be an important night for our community and celebrate our membership who have been so supportive over the past three years.”
Mr Sheekey finalised, “We’re so very grateful and thankful to all of our members for their support to make the 2022 season one of the best on record, and hope our members have had a great season.”
Hockey ACT wish to congratulate all of the award recipients in 2022.
