Thank You Eddie:

Edwina Bone Announces Hockeyroos Retirement

Following a stellar career, spanning two Olympics, two Commonwealth Games and two World Cups; veteran Hockeyroo and Canberra Chill player Edwina Bone, known by many as Eddie, has announced her retirement from international hockey.

Starting from a young age, and working her way through the ranks; her highlights include 212 Hockeyroos appearances including 5 goals, and captaining the squad in Tokyo. Along with winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

A loyal Canberra player and 2011 McKay Medallist; she competed in 11 seasons for the Strikers, and remains a current member of the Canberra Chill, having played in their inaugural 2019 season.

Known for her warmth and gratitude within the Canberra community, Eddie wanted to make special mention to Hockey ACT and ACTAS with whom she credits for making her journey to the top possible. “ACT was the first state rep team I was ever selected for. The opportunity to play for the ACT led to an ACTAS Scholarship, which led to a chance to play for the Canberra Strikers, and ultimately onto the Hockeyroos. None of that would have been possible if I hadn’t been picked for the ACT.”

Eddie was also quick to acknowledge the countless team mates and coaches who have helped her along the way, and with whom she remains close. “I hate trying to mention too many players or coaches as I don’t want to forget anyone. But I do want to make special mention of a few team mates who will forever be close friends for life. Catriona Bailey-Price, who was there with me when I first started playing with the ACT. Anna Flanagan, who helped me so much in particular when I first moved to Perth. And Naomi Evans, who also made the trip across to Perth and is such an unbelievable friend.” Eddie continued, “Mainly, of course, I want to thank Meredith (Eddie’s identical twin sister). We have an amazing bond. I know she will always be there for me and support me whenever I need. It has been so special to be able to play alongside Merph for the Strikers and Chill!”

For her contributions to Canberra hockey, Hockey ACT CEO, Rob Sheekey, remarks; “I wanted to congratulate Eddie on a wonderful playing career with the Hockeyroos. There is no doubt that Eddie will rightly be remembered as one of Canberra’s greatest hockey players with over 200 International matches, two Olympics, two world cups, two Commonwealth Games and a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal.” He continued, “But when I think of Eddie my first thought is the incredible person that she is and the tremendous role model that she is. Her off-field presence draws you in and there are countless children who have met and talked with her who will be hockey players for life just because of that genuine warmth and personality.”

Hockey ACT President, Craig Sloan, continued a similar sentiment, “On behalf of the Board of Hockey ACT I would like to congratulate Edwina on her outstanding playing career with the Hockeyroos that extends the best part of a decade. Eddie has been an amazing role model to many aspiring players and we wish her well for the future.”

With incredible work ethic and fitness, Eddie made a significant impact on the international stage. ACT National Athlete Pathway Program Head Coach, Ben Bishop, continued, “It has been a thrill to see Eddie achieve her goal of playing for the Hockeyroos and even further, to Captain her team at the Olympic Games. Her hard work and dedication to her craft is clear and has been a great source of inspiration to many here in the Canberra hockey community. Eddie has also made great contributions to the ACTAS Hockey Program as well as the Canberra Strikers and Canberra Chill programs throughout her career. We are all so proud of her achievements and wish a big congratulations to Eddie on her retirement.”

Fortunately for the Capital region, hockey isn’t done for Eddie yet, “I can’t wait to get back to Canberra in October and play for the Chill. Playing alongside and being back around my friends in Canberra is always a great thrill and I can’t wait.”

Hockey ACT congratulate Eddie on her international retirement, and thank her for the continued contributions to the ACT and Australian hockey community. We wish Eddie all the best for the future. From her stellar achievements on the field, to the amazing woman she has become, we know it’s going to be great!
