Welcome to the Canberra Regional Hockey Program!

If you enjoy being involved in hockey and developing your skills; whether you be a player, coach, manager or official, you’ve come to the right place.
If you are a returning player, parent or official, welcome back!

What is the Canberra Regional Hockey Program?

The Canberra Regional Hockey Program (Regionals) is a development program delivered by Hockey ACT, available to all junior players who are registered and play only within the Hockey ACT competition (this includes Queanbeyan, Sutton, and Albury areas. Goulburn players would be expected to play for Goulburn at a Regional level). Regionals occupy an important place in the Hockey ACT Player Pathway, providing a meaningful link between club hockey and representative hockey.Upon trialling, successful participants will play for Canberra against teams from Regional NSW at the June Long Weekend Carnival (National Hockey Centre, Lyneham ACT) and NSW State Championships (various locations across NSW). Regionals is a fantastic opportunity for junior players to develop their skills, travel interstate and participate in NSW state carnivals, work with a great team of coaches and represent their home town!
There are also great development opportunities for those wanting to coach, manage a team or develop their sport administration experiences in the Canberra Regional Hockey Program.

What’s new in 2019?

A committee has been established to assist the Hockey ACT staff with management of the Canberra Regional Program. The committee will:
1.      Establish a Regional Program framework that includes a calendar, guidelines, processes and materials to ensure the program is successfully delivered, and that compliments the Representative Program
2.      Develop necessary guidelines and materials for players and parents
3.      Work with coaches and managers, appointing them in a timely manner and providing them with information, guidance and support
4.      Ensure players and parents are kept informed and updated on relevant aspects of the Regional Program.

Team Selections and Grading

Dates for trials and grading will be advertised on the Hockey ACT website and communicated to those that sign-up for the program. Regional coaches will be named in advance of the trials so players know who will be coaching within each age group.

Program Structure

The 2020 Canberra Regional program is currently being developed. Further information will be available late 2019.

Training Sessions

Players will participate in an organised and structured training program delivered by the coaches. The training program will consist of a set number of sessions, which will be advertised in a timely manner. Players are expected to attend all training sessions, or communicate with team coaches/managers when they are unable to attend.

Additional information to follow.

The cost of each program (program fee) is relative to the age group, and will reflect how long each program runs. The program fee will only cover expenses related to registration of teams, insurance, training allocations and volunteer honorariums. Players will be invoiced the program fee, and it must be paid in full by the due date, which will be provided in a timely manner prior to trials.

Travel and Accommodation

Travel and accommodation is organised and paid for by the individual players/parents, and is separate from the program fee. On occasion, if regional tournaments are a long distance from Canberra; team accommodation and travel may be offered at an additional expense. Team Managers will communicate this and provide further details, as required.

Player Commitment

·       Attend every trial for which they are available. If unable to attend a trial, players must communicate this to Hockey ACT in a timely manner.
·    Attend and contribute to all training sessions. If a player cannot attend, they must communicate this to their coach or manager. Hockey ACT will notify players of training  dates and commitments for 2019. Failure to attend training, and communicate appropriately, may result in the player being withdrawn from the program.
·     Work cooperatively with all volunteers; including (but not limited to) coaches, managers, coordinators, umpires and officials.
·      Sign the Hockey Australia Player Code of Conduct, and act in accordance with these guidelines. Parents will also be required to sign the Hockey Australia  Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct.
